They look picturesque—sparkling rows of icicles hanging from your eaves, glimmering in the winter sun. But make no mistake: those icicles are a red alert. They are the visible sign of an ice dam, a destructive force that can tear apart your gutters, lift your shingles, and send water pouring into your walls.
At Top Pro Restoration, we’ve seen thousands of dollars in damage caused by frozen water that had nowhere to go. Here is the brutal truth about ice dams and how to stop them before they breach your home.
What Actually Causes an Ice Dam?
It’s a war between heat and cold. An ice dam forms when your roof is warm enough to melt snow, but your eaves (the edges) are cold enough to freeze it.
The Melt: Heat escapes from your living space into your attic, warming the roof deck and melting the snow layer.
The Flow: The meltwater runs down the roof under the snow blanket.
The Freeze: When it hits the cold eaves (which aren’t over the heated house), it refreezes.
The Dam: This ice builds up into a ridge, trapping future meltwater. That water has nowhere to go but back up under your shingles and into your ceiling.
The 3 Stages of Damage
Stage 1: Gutter Collapse. The sheer weight of the ice rips gutters away from the fascia board.
Stage 2: Shingle Lift. As water freezes and expands, it pries your shingles apart, breaking the adhesive seal.
Stage 3: Interior Ruin. Once the water bypasses the roof, it soaks insulation (making it useless) and rots drywall. If you see a wet stain on your ceiling in winter, the dam has already broken through.
Immediate Fixes vs. Long-Term Cures
DO NOT: Hack away at the ice with a hammer or shovel. You will crack your shingles faster than the ice. DO: Call a professional for steam removal. It is the only safe way to melt the dam without damaging the roof material.
The Real Cure: The permanent fix isn’t on the roof; it’s in the attic. You need to stop the heat from escaping. This requires:
- Sealing air leaks around light fixtures and pipes.
- Upgrading attic insulation to keep the heat in the living space.
- Ensuring proper ventilation (see our next post!).
Don’t wait for the leak. If you have massive icicles, you have a problem.
I tried filling in info on the pop-up that offered 10% discount….perhaps you’ll honor that offer to me…
Yes, we have ice dams…on gutters that run the full length of front of house. We would appreciate a quote.
Please be aware that we would also appreciate that you come with proof of license and insurance. Workmen’s Comp is a huge plus!
Tomorrow Thurs Feb 12 we will be home. Looking to get this ice situation taken care of ASAP.
GRACIAS, y buenas noches.
